which is the best processor for under £100,im not looking at lightning clock speeds, just a decent chip, even a budget model,as long as its over 2ghz,as in my opinion is plenty good enough to run most applications with 1.5gb of ddr ram
amd or intel,as long as its over 2ghz
cheers

To be honest, Intel's current Core2Duo series of chips blows most anything AMD has out of the water at the moment, at least untill they release their new range of chips come around june.

Your best bet is the Core2Duo E6300, which sells from anywhere between £111-£125. Due to the way it's manufactured, the 1.86ghz will be as fast if not faster than a comparable 2.8-3+ghz processor, given the increased number of operations per cycle. Add to that the fact that it can easialy be overclocked providing you have a motherboard capable of doing so.

Don't be too influenced by benchmarks. The AMD64 X2 4600+ is more than a match for the 6300 series Core2Duo.

One is a Porche & the other is a Ferarri .... does it really matter which one is a little faster. Neither one blows the other out of the water ... as some like to claim....

.... neither you nor I would notice the difference .

Price performance ratio is better achieved with AMD, as well as the fact that an AMD board with AM2 (940) CPU socket will also accept upcoming quad core processors ... Intel does not offer that luxury.

Go for the 4600+ or higher.

Since you're currently looking for the under 100 range, then I suggest getting the fastest Sempron processor you can find.

Because the Sempron processor is great for mainstream applications, since your primary focus doesn't seem to be gaming, I think this would be the best choice, as it's primary competition, the Intel Celeron seems to be missing right now.

as phillip said the core 2 duo doesn't "blow away" the amd cpu's the difference is minimal say like 5 to 10 percent faster. you'd be really hard pressed to notice this. as for my recommendation i would say either any athlon x2 or any core 2 duo. both are very good. just find one that is priced right. i happen to have an athlon x2 3800 that runs at 2.0ghz its been a sweet cpu handles anything i throw at it. don't get caught up in the hype over intel is better amd is better.

the AMD 64 3700+ or 4000+, both have 1 mb cache.

Well, depends on your socket type as well.
