it has a new battery and alternator but can discharge overnight but not every night. The battery can be charging and reading 14V and then suddenly the meter reads 4v then 10v 12v up and down and the engine tone changes. Stop the engine and its fine then 1 hour later goes barmy. Checked the earth. Can't think what else it can be.

sounds like faulty voltage regulator in the alternator
exchange the alternator for a new one

I would expect the regulator to be replaced with the alternator? Assuming it wasn't this is probably the problem...... Does his battery warning light come on when driving?
One other thing, has he got any unusual (and heavy) loads connected? To drain the battery overnight there has to be something drawing a considerable amount of current, e.g. the headlights...

Check the main positive supply at the starter motor end, the small wires connected there are the power for the rest of the car. wiggle it see if its loose and clean it up.
