What are some good devices to stop muggers (besides pepper spray) and where can I find them?

That would be pepper spray.

There are only three reasonable alternatives for stopping an assailant.....pepper spray, Taser (the type you shoot, like what the cops use, NOT a handheld model) and firearms.

There are a lot of problems though. One of which is legality. In many states, you will go to jail if you shoot an assailant. The standards for self defense are either absent or so strict that 0% of cases meet them. Further, expect to be sued by your assailant. 100% of criminals sue their victims. Only a handful of states have laws preventing this (example, Colorado). It is more expensive to fight than to settle. If you damage the criminal in any way, especially if he is black, you are going to have to give him much more money. Taser has this problem to a far lesser degree. The problem is that, even though a Taser will not harm a person in any way whatsoever, it has become popular to say that it does and that it hurts (it doesn't really hurt that much). In many places, expect this to translate into a greater ability for the criminal to steal money from you using the court system.

The only really viable alternative is pepper spray. A well documented history of being harmless, it is both extremely effective and provides deniability. Make no mistake. If you don't live somewhere like Colorado, you WILL be paying money to the guy who tried to hurt you. This is part of the cost of not lynching liberals from the nearest tree whenever they are discovered. But, it will be far less. Also, you will be much more likely to use it because it is both more portable and easier to access.

All that being said, the main weapon you use to stop muggers is awareness. Don't live where they live. Don't engage in behavior that increases the likelihood they will attack you. Be aware of your surroundings. These are the things that really protect you from crime.

I'm really sorry that you're concerned about this.

As a male, and for the least problems with the law, buy a collapsable baton. It's a hand-held stick that can extend - contract with at least a pound or so of weight at the end. Some states only allow batons of a certain length. You are better off asking a lawyer rather than a police officer about this.

You can't fight a gun, or a knife, really, but in any other situation, at the first sign of a problem show them you have it. At the first sign of an attack aim for any part of the head.

don't take the pup to the park until he is bigger and can defend himself - but from the sounds of it, I'd just not take him to the park at all. try taking him to obedience training which will socialize the dog and also help bond the two of you. You can't use a taser or you may kill the other dog. the pepper spray isn't a good idea either in the dog park. Are you sure that the dogs are attacking your dog or just trying to play. I'd probably sue you too if you sprayed pepper into my dogs eyes. you should just stay away from the dog park until the pup is older.
