Many computer makers and communities have recycling programs. Computer equipment has toxic metals and should be recycled properly.
The only company one I am aware of is the HP recycling program. See http://www.hp.com/hpinfo/globalcitizenship/environment/recycle/index.html
ALL BRANDS ACCEPTED, it says
My community also has a pickup day once per year to recycle such electronics. Perhaps organize one for yours.
Before recycling, it is prudent to destroy the disk drive, Just deleting files is OK, but someone clever can restore. If you cannot write to the entire disk to overwrite data, try using a powerful magnetic over the drive to destroy the contents.

If you expect that someone else may be using your old computer, remember to destroy all data on it.
If you are selling your computer, thoroughly clean your hard drive. Deleting files and reformatting is not enough. Reformatting does not overwrite every sector, and private information can remain retrievable. Use a secure delete or disk wiping utility to overwrite every sector on all hard drives. Be sure to use a utility that supports the U.S. DoD standard of seven passes or wipes. While this method is good enough for most people, be aware that the only absolute way of destroying all traces of everything your hard drives is to have these disks degaussed (demagnetized) and physically destroyed.
Suggested: BCWipe, Evidence Eliminator, or SDelete.

use the componants in another or donate to charity
hard drives can be reused if only for backup purposes
fans can be used again cos they can last over 50,000 hours running time.
power pack can be used if modern enough to connect to new motherboard.
the case could be used again or primed and sprayed to make it look new again.
ide cables can be used again, if not in your system then someone will use them(just ask friends)
memory may be usefull to someone with an older system if it wont go in your new one.
cmos battery may be ok for a while yet !!

Spend some bucks to bring it to a running condition and donate it to some poor school which has adopted slum children.
