There is a VERY famous true story in Newfoundland (Canada) of a Newfoundland Dog who rescued all the people off a beached ferry in a blizzard. Search or the Wreck of the S.S. Ethie. The dog carried a baby from ship to shore, in his mouth as I understand it, while he swam and didn't get the baby wet. Among other things.
My dog saved the lives of a litter of kittens when he was 4 months old. It was March (in Montreal - COLD) and I took him out for a walk before going to work. I live next to a grocery store, adjacent to the docking bay. As we were walking by on our way back my puppy was going nuts! Pulling and jumping and crying, he'd never done this before. So I stopped to get him under control but he wouldn't stop. So gave in and went to see what he was crazy about. There was a box of kittens YOUNG kittens, not yet weened left by a dumpster there in the docking bay.
I picked up the box, the puppy went back to normal. Went inside and called in late to work. By that time he was licking them and nosing them. I called to a close by animal hospital and had them picked up right away. The last report I had, two out of 5 had survived.
Since then my dog gets VERY upset if he hears an animal or child cry or scream. It could be on TV and he'll come running.
Over the summer, when he was 9 months old, he walked around at a BBQ with a baby/toddler just learning to walk hanging onto his tail.
He's amazing, and he's not even a 1 1/2 yet!
You can contact me for more info at shirleywillow@gmail.com I don't check my email to often though.

I can't truly think of a lifesaving story about an animal at the moment but my neighbor has two really old horses (30-Scooter and 38-Joe) and one of them (Joe) is missing his left eye due to injury causing it to have to be surgically removed. Scooter always stays on Joe's left side to help guide him as to where to go. If Joe is about to run into something or step in a hole, Scooter will gently nudge him over out of the way of the obstacle. Scooter takes very good care of his friend Joe and without him, Joe may not live or have lived as long with out Scooter to take care of him and guide him along his way.
Also, watch animal planet's Animal Miracles show or go to their website and type that show in.
I hope this helps, good luck!

I have an amazing yellow Labrador Retriever named Tritan. Right before my youngest brother died he was worried how I would be if something happened to him, so he got me this yellow Lab puppy. My brother and I were very close and he had been suffering from a very rare cancer. He was worried I would be alone and so would his dog Remy. This puppy was full of energy and trouble but had a heart of gold and an amazing ability to sense how people were feeling. He made us all laugh when we all wanted to cry. Right after my brother past away I got severely and permanently injured. I sank into a deep depression and and refused to eat or get out of bed. At the same time my brother's dog lost interest in life to and seemed to go down the same path as I. However, Tritan would not have it. Every morning by 7:30 he would climb up on the bed, stand over me and bark. If that did not work he would remove all the blankets from the bed, and if that did not work he would resort to pouncing on my repeatedly until I did get up. After that he would retrieve his and Remy's leash and bark until we all got out of the house. When Remy refused to eat Tritan would takes bits of his food and drop it by Remy's face and lay nose to nose with him. He also did the same for me ( but I was not eating dog food) Somehow he replaced the void in Remy's heart and life and the dog started to live again. Tritan always knows when Remy is depressed and does anything to cheer him up including handing over his bones. And times that I could not stop crying Tritan always found the way to dry up the tears. He is a hyper dog but if he senses someone in distress either emotionally or physically he is the quietest most loving dog. When I gave up he refuse to let me, and he never left my side.
He also has helped my elderly grandpa, who is blind and hard of hearing. I occassionally bring Tritan to visit, and the usually hyper Tritan is very gentle and loving to my fragile grandpa. On one occassion we stopped in and I could not find him. Tritan was on easy and refused to let me leave. I figured that my uncle had taking my grandpa somewhere, so as I was about to leave Tritan stopped me from getting to the door and would not budge. So out of doubt I walked the dog through the house, and did not see anything until Tritan dragged me to the bathroom where grandpa had fallen. Without Tritan's persistence I would have left and it would have been two days before anyone found him.
Tritan was a true gift from someone very special and without him 3 of us may not be here. You can reach me at tritanbear@yahoo.com
