I would ask her to give me a few ideas. That way you can be sure. If she won't say, you know her better than anyone here does. And in agreement with others, an engagement followed by wedding ring would be the grandest.
Sir Charles, the Cheeky
P.S. My mother always liked clothes, personal things, but never appliances or things for the house. To her those were things one acquires as needed, not as gifts except on wedding days when just starting out.

It all depends on how she feels about turning 50. I've already decided (and I'm not that close!) that I want to go away with my husband so that nobody draws attention to the fact that I've reached 50. A surprise party with all my friends and relations would be the most mortifying thing I could imagine. However, if she's comfortable with the age thing, you could throw her a surprise bash. It depends if she wants to play it up or play it down.

Depending on the type of woman she is and your budget,a weekend to Paris (romantic),dinner and show.Gather friends and family around for party at home or away.Buy/make a little something for every birthday,eg nice soap, bubble bath, funny socks, picture of you both, piece of jewellery, so she has 50 gifts to open, friends and family might want to do something like that with you too.Just make her feel special.

Make sure she knows how beautiful you think she is, just the way she is. Maybe take her on a little romantic weekend at a secluded resort, and make love to her at every opportunity. Buy her flowers. Rub her shoulders, hold her hand, and listen to her talk. Gaze into her eyes. Buy her a stuffed toy. Let her know that she's the best thing that ever happened to you. Believe it yourself.

book a fantastic meal after abit of clubbing (if she still likes going out clubbing) but do it all in a stretch limo with all the works inside, the champers, roses, etc. These limos are fab and you can feel like a celeb for a night.

Buy her something sparkly , or take her on a cruise . If you have a lower budget why not do something fun and different like ice skating . or take her to a west end show in london then stay the night . just make sure she knows shes loved .

I would take her on a nice vacation to somewhere she has always wanted to go.At the very least -take her to the nicest restaurant you can afford and afterwards go to a show, concert, etc -something special- that she enjoys and has interest in!
