Do some people find them creepy? Have there been reports of tons of flies in haunted houses?
I just don't get why so many scary movies use flies.

Some people are just that creeped out by bugs. Its a good touch to scare those people even if nothing else does. Fear of insects in general is one of the most common fears in our society. For example, I deployed in the Army with two grown men who would run screaming and later cry over any bug that crossed their path. Even lady bugs. So of course they are terrified of flies.

Flies lead to maggots. Maggots eat dead flesh. Thats creepy.

They symbolize death and decay- flies gather over corpses and dead things. They are used to foreshadow events. a subtle form of atmosphere building

Rotting flesh attracts several sorts of insects --- that's natural.
And it is very creepy. I don't like that noise of flying flies,
that "humming" ---- kills me. I could never sleep in a room
with ONE fly in it...

I don't know but I thought the fly in the Ring was kinda creepy.
