I LOVE this movie,it is one of my top ten, and it could not end any other way. It is just how Scarlett's life is, just when you think she is down and out, she has to pull herself up from her bootstraps again-read the sequel-Scarlett, by Alexandra Ripley. There was a movie made, but it will NEVER measure up to the original.

I grew up with the film and watched it as often as possible; for many years I admired Scarlett's strength and ability to achieve her goals and survive through all the challenges. At some point, however, it dawned on me that she was throwing away a (handsome and rich!) man who adored her for someone (a wimp!) in love with somebody else. What an idiot!
I have not been able to enjoy the movie since that time. Yes, I believe she deserved to be left behind. My only question is why he tolerated her attitude for as long as he did.
