I have a 50 gallon fish tank which I am revitalizing. I only ever kept tetras in this tank. I would like to expand to other species so that I may have better variety. Can you give me some names of fish that have worked well for you?

Also...how many fish can you have in a 50-gallon tank?

Freshwater:

I suggest getting a few bottom feeders, however I don't like the red tailed shark. It is way too aggressive. Other fish are different varieties of tetras, female bettas, believe it or not, are great. You can have more than one female betta in a tank. I don't suggest male bettas because I had one with tetras and they chewed his rear fin off, however it grew back. I hope this helps!

fish that are larger need more space. In general smaller fish like tetras you can go a fish per gallon or slightly over. The general rule is one inch of fish per gallon but if you want to go over slighly in a well established tank with lots of happy healthy fish its not a big problem. You should provide lots of plants to hide in and lots of objects to swim around -- like drifwood and stacked rocks and whatnot -- in a 50 gallon you can make a good figure 8 swim pattern with 2 separate clumps in the middle for them two swim around. With tetras its safe to keep rasboras, corys, mollys, swordtails, platys, angelfish, danios, bamboo shrimp, guppies, rainbows, there are lots of docile fish out there.

Here's a chart that will help you determine which fish get along and which do not.
