We just planted an apricot tree in the backyard and were told it will do best if other fruit trees are planted near it. Do I need to plant another apricot tree or could I plant a peach or plum tree instead?

Yes, you will need to plant a different variety of apricot for cross pollination and better fruiting. Here is a link....

Yes, you could use a plum. Plums will cross with apricots (called pluots), so plum would be the better choice over a peach. What you need to check is when it blooms. Different varieties will bloom at different times, so check both your apricot variety and your plum variety to make sure there is at least some overlap in their bloom times.

(I'm not sure who gave me the thumbs-down on my answer, but I invite you to prove me wrong. I agree that a different variety of apricot would be the better polinator; however, plums, being in the same genus and able to hybridize with apricots, could be used to polinate the apricot. The asker clearly would rather have a plum rather than a second apricot. Unless the asker plans on opening a fruit stand, one apricot tree should be plenty.

You should plant another variety of apricot. And be sure and NOT plant any almond trees.

You can plant any kind of tree. I'm not sure what type of climate you live in, but if it's a warmer climate you should plant a citrus tree, like orange or lemon. They smell wonderful when they bloom!

A peach or plum will work because they are also pitted. You just want the cross pollination.

I dont think it needs another ap tree to fertilize itself. Other flowers nearby will bring more bee activity.
