Most stereo equipment, most non-computer appliances, and older computers do not like non-finalized disks.

A rule of thumb (with DVD+/-R disks is that you should finalize if you plan to use the disk on another computer/disc drive. So, for DVD-R's, you should always finalize.

DVD+/-RW discs should NOT be finalized unless you have something so critical that you do not want the potential to overwrite it, such as world domination plans and winning lottery numbers. In all seriousness, only finalize a DVD+/-RW disk only if you plan on not using it anymore.

Finalize? DVD-R, yes. DVD-RW, no.

Hope this helps!

Finalizing a DVD-RW simply means that is "closes" the disc so that you CANNOT write to it again.

Main reason for finalizing is that alot of DVD players won't play a DVD-RW disc unless it's finalized.

You have to finalize a disk before you can play it on something else other than your computer.
Finalizing also prohibits writing anything else to the disk.
