A Gunsmoke Daydream
It is early morning in Dodge City and the first stage coach is gearing up to head out of town. “Marshall Dillon! Marshall Dillon!” Chester hollers, running into the Marshall’s office. “Miss Kitty is a-leavin’ an' she sez it’s fer good!” he exclaims. Then he stops short, seeing an unfamiliar woman sitting in the Marshall’s lap.
“Why don’t you introduce me to your friend, Matt Baby?” the woman says.
“Well, Chester, I’d like you to meet my wife,” Dillon says. “Miss Sunshine, this is Chester.”
“Yer wife?” Chester is confused, but gradually recovers. “Mighty pleased to meetcha, ma’am.” Chester works this over in his mind, and his eyes widen with enlightenment. “Wull, this must have somethin’ ta do with Miss Kitty’s lightin’ out!”
“You’ve hit the nail straight on the head,” Dillon confirms. “Miss Sunshine had my heart from our first kiss and Kitty knew there was no way she could stand up to the competition.” He and Sunshine smile adoringly at each other. No words are necessary to express their feelings; their love story is written in the stars.

Matt Murphy was not one for parties. He detested them ever since he had gone on the wagon and given up alcohol. There was no way he was going to spend more than half-an-hour or so at this one listening and watching a bunch of crazy drunks. A fancy dress party of all things. He wished he was a thousand miles away from it. The theme had been set by a John Wayne fan and was 'Western Costume only'. Murphy reckoned that every fancy dress hire shop within a hundred miles had been emptied out by the number of guests that confronted him when he arrived.
The hall was clouded in a pall of thick acrid smoke from the earlier fireworks display and was not helped by the fifty or so budding sheriffs who were taking part in the 'Quickest Draw in the West' competition. The simple caps used in the guns gave off an equally disgusting smell and the gunsmoke was everywhere.
If it had not been for Eileen, his first and truest love, he would certainly not have come but she had convinced him that it might be worth his while. He could see her point now, or was it her points, as she appeared dressed exquisitely as Miss Kitty. 'Good God' thought Matt, 'but this must be a daydream. She certainly looks the part'. She walked up to him and gave him what he hoped was the first kiss of the night, but not the last.
'And who are you supposed to be' she asked giving him a very neat curtsy. 'Why mam' he drawled 'I'm Matt baby, Marshal Matt Dillion from the darnest black hole you are ever likely to visit'. 'And where is that, may I ask' she was obviously willing to play the game for his sake. 'Mam' he continued 'none other that Dodge City, the most hornery place in this God forsaken piece of the US of A'. They both laughed and went outside to catch some fresh air where they caught the last rays of sunshine before sunset.
He kissed her tenderly as they strolled through the garden and picked her a beautiful red rose. As he clipped it into her dark hair he added 'You are now more than perfect, Miss Kitty'. Murphy was beginning to enjoy the evening despite his earlier misgivings.
He sat for a while with Eileen in the shade of an old apple tree and spoke softly to her. 'Eileen' he said as he arose up from the seat and kneeled down on one knee. He produced a small box which she immediately recognised as one which usually contains a ring. She was not wrong. He took from it a glittering diamond ring, and as he passed it to her, he asked 'Will you give me the great pleasure and indeed honour of consenting to be my wife'.
Eileen stood up, pulled up her triple skirts and took a small gun from a leg holster. She pointed it at his forehead as he stayed rigid and said 'Goddamn it Matt. I thought I was going to end up like the real Miss Kitty. Yes, you silly so-and-so, I will'.
As they kissed, Murphy thought to himself 'Blinking Westerns. It's turned out to be more like that film Love Story'................

MARSHAL DILLION SAT AT HIS WINDOW AND WOULD DAYDREAM ABOUT HIS FIRST KISS WITH MISS KITTY. IT WOULD BE AT LOVER'S PARK THAT IS LOCATED IN DODGE CITY. IT WOULD BE A NICE WARM DAY WITH LOTS OF SUNSHINE.
ONE DAY WHILE RIDING WITH HIS FATHER AND BROTHER THROUGH DODGE CITY IN THEIR STAGE COACH, MATT BABY AND HIS GANG CAME RIDING THROUGH SHOOTING AT THE TOWN'S PEOPLE. WHEN THE GUNSMOKE CLEARED, MARSHAL DILLION AND HIS FATHER AND BROTHER WERE SHOT AND KILLED. HIS DAYDREAM WOULD NEVER BECOME A GREAT LOVE STORY.
