what's wrong with 2i? is it 2i + 0?

The standard form for a complex number is a + bi, where a is the real part and bi is the imaginary part.

Since there is no real part, it becomes

0 + 2i

The standard form is i2, so that i is not confused as a variable. Writing 0 + i2 is superfluous. Engineers use j2 because they use i as a variable to represent instantaneous value of electrical current.
