An ASTEROID?
You mean a member of the belt of planetoids between Mars and Jupiter?
A Meteoroid is the thing when it's orbiting the solar system. A Meteor is the thing when it's streaking through the Earth's atmosphere. A Meteorite is the thing after it's landed on Earth and can be picked up by scientists and put in a museum.
A comet is a thing that orbits the solar system and occasionally comes close enough to pass through Earth's atmosphere, but does not actually hit the Earth- it swings through our atmosphere and then continues on its orbit. An example of this is Haley's comet, which has an orbit that brings it near Earth about once every 70 years. It briefly passes through our atmosphere in a beautiful streak, and then continues on its way.
The word "asteroid" in the question bothers me, though... this might be a trick question... the answer might be "comet" since I think many comets are considered asteroids? But it asks about the moment it enters the atmosphere... comets are comets no matter where they are, but meteors are ONLY meteors when traveling through the Earth's atmosphere. Say "meteor" and ask in class, "Are all meteors asteroids?"

There's a somewhat complicated three-level answer to this:
Any object that enters the Earth's atmosphere is known as a meteoroid.
The trail of light left by the meteoroid as it burns up in the atmosphere is a meteor.
If the object survives the journey and actually hits the ground, it is a meteorite.
(Comets are large chunks of rock and ice which orbit the Sun, travelling through the Solar System.)

meteor, fireball (no remember if that's sizeable adequate). maximum meteors you notice are particularly purely as vast as a grain of sand or a small rock. to realize the earth they might could desire to start up because of the fact the size of a small automobile. fortunate for us, maximum do no longer attain us!
