It stands for Absent without leave. It is mainly used relating to the Armed Services when a soldier for example takes off without permission.

We say it a lot in general anytime someone disappears from where they should be. (Gone AWOL)

Hope that helps

In the U.S, U.K, and France, military personnel become AWOL (Absent Without Official Leave, pronounced "A-Wall"(US) or "A-Wol"(UK) ) when they are absent from their post without a valid pass or leave.

AWOL also refers to:

Absent WithOut Leave (or absence without official leave), an acronym used in armed forces of many English speaking countries.
Alcohol WithOut Liquid, a play on the military term.
American Way Of Life.
A.W.O.L, the name of rapper AZ (Rapper)'s 2005 Album.
