God forbid they should learn too much.

The amount of homework given should correlate to the grade level of the child (according to the latest studies). To calculate the number of minutes of homework your child should have (on average), multiply the grade level by 10. For example, if your child is in 2nd grade, your child should be doing about 20 minutes of homework a night. Your sixth grader would be doing about an hour a night.

The purpose of homework should be for practice of a learned concept or for memorization (spelling words, times tables, etc.). Keep in mind that tests are not the only way to assess what a student knows. Studying for tests shouldn't be the sole source of homework, because tests shouldn't be the sole source of assessment.

If you feel your child is receiving too much homework, talk to your child's teacher. It may be that your child is below average and struggles through what other students can do in a shorter amount of time, or it may be your expectations for completing the homework are greater than the teacher's. It could also just be that your child's teacher IS giving too much homework. Express your concerns. It takes a village and all that jazz.

Each teacher assigns homework as they see fit, if they decide to give thier students a little break, then they do. Different subjects in school take a certain length of time. Not all students work at the same pace, some are a little slower than others.Unfortually, I was a little slower, mainly because of seziure meds. I have to take. In high school, I studied notes from 5 classes for 3 hours, there may have been a pop-quiz the next day, who knew? Thurs. night studied those note (m-thu) for the test on Friday. It did pay off, seniors who had at least a B average didn't have to take the final exam, I only had to take one final. So your answer is in the question, they should have homework everynight to study for that test.

There has been quite a bit of research recently that indicates that most homework assigned by teachers has very little educational value and that the more HW you assign, the fewer benefits you get back in return.I think a lot of teachers give hw because that's just the way it's always been done. There isn't alot of thought put into what the teachers expect the students to learn or what exaclty they are accomplishing with a lo tof the hw that goes home. There have been some great articles and published research into this recently.

I agree with Suzanne D. I am a teacher and the kids who work hard in class have very little homework each night. It's the kids that goof off that have a lot because they have to finish up all of their classowrk.

Also remember, school has much higher standards than when we were kids. There is so much information to cover each year!

Good chance that kids don't pay alot of attention in class so they have to learn somehow.

Okay depending on the age of the child i agree with the teachers if the kid is in elementary school or maybe middle school they are probably right but if the child is in high school they may not be correct i am currently in high school and my teachers pack on the assignments without giving us time to work in class and with going to six classes and having most of my teachers do that it ends up being four or five hours of homework.

my son works very hard in school and he still gets lots of homework - his teacher verifies this - she also says that if the homework is taking more than an hour, then he should stop, and I can just add a note to the end of his work.
But sometimes there are a lot of distractions and avoidances and if the actual time spent working was counted up, it would not add up to as much as you think.

As a teacher, I've noticed that the students who work diligently during class don't have very much homework. The ones who goof off tend to have more work.

Well i'm a kid and i can have homework up to 3 hours. i guess the point is to practice what they've learned at school so they understand the lesson better.

First, every moment you spend learning something is never a wasted moment. Secondly, it keeps you out of trouble. A brain is a terrible thing to waste. Truer words were never spoken.
