I listed my three favorite Custer books, each has a span of time that covers Libbie Custer's long life and activities.
I live near Avondale, Colorado where Fort Reynolds is and a place that Custer visited and stayed for a while, this is a very rural area so I have perhaps ridden over the same trails as he.
The Native Americans I know, most Vietnam Vets, have more respect for Custer than most any "white man", soldiers do their duty.

as a child, maybe five, I watched " they died with there boots on". I remember crying to my mom at the end of the film that Custer had been killed, this was a shock to me because that was not the way I thought things happened. from that point on I was hooked.growing up and my studies changed my opinion of him from childhood hero to a real sack of feces. I have been to the little bighorn battle field and recommend that you go as well. great historical spot.

interesting facts about custer are;
1. - his brother thomas also died at the battle of the little bighorn. showing just what he was perepared to sacrifice for his own legend.
2. - he gradueated as the botton student of hiw west point academy class.
3.- insisted on carrying TWO standards on the little bighorn campaign with him, his regimantal one, and his own flag representing that he was a civil war, brevet general.
an ego tistical maniac, intent on making a bame for himslf at no matter what the cost. Sadly he succeeded and is noted as a hero rather then a dangerous, selfish, risk taker.
George bush similarities anyone?..................

the only thing sad about Custer's death was that he took so many men with him just because he was trying to glory hunt his way into the Democratic nomination for President.

If you are interested in studying a man consumed by his ego, and learning from that, he is a good selection. Perhaps there are others better to study.
