I am living in Taipei, Taiwan, where I have been for 3 years. I want to come home to the United States (Rhode Island) and wonder if it is possible to find work before arriving (This is the most important/pressing concern) So my question is - how do I get a job before coming home? Also, are there support services - information for ex-pats who are returning home after a long absence? Thank you all.

To tell the truth, three years is not really that long. There are thousands of people in your shoes and they usually do pretty well, many in government work or the military. Just remember that your current employer thought you had the ability to adapt to the new lifestyle of Taiwan. Now you are coming home so it will be easier than the move of 3 years ago.

Wherever you go in the US you can find jobs, apartments or homes on-line. Yahoo! has these tools on the home page. You can also look at www.realestate.com for housing.

Look at USAJOBS for work in the Federal Government if you have never done that before. Check out Monster.com or the Hot Jobs on the Yahoo page for jobs. America is much more "wired" for things like this than even three years ago.

Check out the Welcome Wagon or the Chamber of Commerce of the community you want to live in. They have been helpful for me in my past moves. Good Luck!

I don't think 3 years is that long , but many newspapers are on online now including the classified sections , soooo ,
Find the one for your area and start checking the listings .
And buy a coat , the weather still gets cold there.
