well, as several people already said, bill cowher was very carefull not to use the word retire. he made it very clear that he was resigning the position with the steelers, and he also made it very clear he wouldn't coach in 07, but he did leave the future open and will likely coach either in 08 or 09. I don't doubt cowher wants to take some time off and spend it with his family, but the reality of the situation is that the steelers/rooney's are tight as hell, and they aren't gonna pay 8 mil when they can get someone to do the job for 4 mil. cowher spent 15 years with the steelers, and he realizes he can get more, he is worth more then what he's making. taking some time off and coming back to a team with a deeper pocket is the way to do it. anyway i'm pretty sure grimm or whisenhunt will get the job, but we'll see.

He resigned he didn't retire. There is still a year on his contract with the Steelers but I'm sure he's still going to get paid.
The classic answer -- wanting to spend more time with his family. He has a daughter that is grown, I don't know how old the other is and they have a new home in North Carolina where the wife and daughters have been living. On second thought the spend more time with his family may be an attempt to avoid divorce -- NFL football coaches rarely get divorced though -- too much money.

Bill Cowher said his reasons for retiring were not only his age but beacause of spending time with his family, he has two daughters that are already around the age of highschool, either a little older or younger, and he wants to be around to spend time with them. That's what I've heard him say whenever he released the statement, anyways. hope that helps!!

He didn't retire, he resigned. He took a year off to spend time with his family. The guy still looks young enough to coach. I'm pretty sure he'll be coaching football in 2008.

No. I wouldn't be suprised if he doesn't suddenly get spotted in Miami. They have a coaching vacancy you know. Either that or he will take a year or 2 out and return and coach for the highest salary in the nfl. Washington would be my guess.

He's going to be named the coach of the Dolphins next week and will get a five year 30 million dollar contract. He left because they were not willing to give him a contract extension and raise after he led them to a Superbowl.

He didn't retire, he resigned. Probably one the assistance will be the coach either Wizenhutt or Grimm.
