I thought i'd put this in the philosophy category, just because although i'm asking for science fiction, i don't like movie's like Star trek or those movies where the aliens are all like 'i'm gunna kill all the humans.' the movies i kinda like are the science fiction ones, that are kinda philosophical at the same time, about life and the human race...kinda hard to explain, but exmaples of these are:
K-Pax, a Space Odyssey, and i really enjoyed Mission to mars. :)
So, anyone have seen any movies like these to recommend?

Based upon what you said your philosophy tends to be in this regard, I think you would probably enjoy a cult classic from the early 60's titled : The Day the Earth Stood Still.
It may have been the late 50's in fact but the message remains as you would like it to be.
Special efffects are typical for that era and not very good compared to what we have today but an excellent film nonetheless.

A Sound Of Thunder: is the funniest sci fi horror movie ever.

The Matrix is good but if you like that then you should try watching the Broken Saints trillogy. I believe you can still watch it for free on the net at brokensaints.com somewhere on the site.

I like War Of The Worlds its got some pretty cool concepts and stuff and its a lil bit scary at the same time.

Contact is probably the best one nobody has pointed out yet. A very spiritual sci fi movie with great concepts.

There is alot of anime movies you could watch about stuff like this Appleseed would be a good start. If you like that you might like some more anime sci fi.

Minority Report is also okay, the concept it raises is always worth imagining AGAINST it happening hahahaha. I also find the Matrix trilogy excellent (notwithstanding the flying in Part 3! hahahahaha)

I am also an aspiring science fiction writer too.

Regards.

K-Pax is great!

Doctor Who. Get into it, you'll be sucked in for life.

(hasn't been around for 43 years for nothing!)

longshot here, but ever heard of 'hitchhikers guide to the galaxy'? not philosophical, but a very good watch and no butchery and shootouts stuff, though they get shot at a couple of times.
