If you mean the men's hairstyle with the front part of their heads shaved and with braids, it was the only men's hairstyle allowed in the Qing Dynasty, and it is NOT the traditional Chinese hairstyle. It is the hairstyle of Manchu men. Before the Qing Dynasty, the Han Chinese did not easily cut their hair, because they regard filial piety as a kind of virtue, and in Xiao Jing (孝經, the Classic of Filial Piety) there is a sentence "Since the body, hair and skin come from the parents, do not destroy them; this is the first step of filial piety (身體髮膚,受之父母,不敢毀傷,孝之始也)." When the Manchus took over China, they forced all the Chinese to change their hairstyle and costume into the Manchu style. A great many Han people refused to change, and there were great slaughters for them. Gradually, every men in China had to shave the front part of their head and wear the Manchu costume until the end of the Qing Dynasty.
