My parents' anniversary is January 17. My sister wants to celebrate the weekend before, and I want to celebrate the weekend after. Which is better?

Actually whatever is best for everyone, but your really another year older the week-end after the event [birthday} or anniversary and that is what the celebration is about.

I suggest the weekend after since they already had the anniversary, nothing to celebrate if the date did not hit yet:)

i think that birthdays and anniversaries should be celebrated in the exact day otherwise they are less fun. in your case before or after does matter becos it is the midweek, wednesday. i would prefer the friday night cos it is more close to the actual date. Happy Anniversary to them and may they have many more....

Why not ask your parents which day they wish to celebrate, since it is after all a celebration of their marriage. They may have plans of doing something just the two of them, that could interfere with your plans.....so I would check with them.

I'd do it afterwards. My mom always said it was bad luck to celebrate before the actual day. Old habits die hard.
