Now that you know what happens, hang the picture a little higher so that it covers the gap.
But, take a cloth and some woodglue, put the cloth in the glue and soak it really good, hang the cloth inside the gap, see if you can attach it somehow on the upperside of the gap, and let it dry, it will harden, once it's hard, you can fill the gap with regular gapfiller that you can get from any D I Y shop.
You can also make the gap larger using straight lines, then make some what's it called inside the sorta frame you have then, and fill it up with some plasterboard, fill the lines, let it dry and sand it to smooth.
Dunno if the above makes any sense, i'd know what to do if i saw the actual gap.
And so there are many other ways, need more details to give a good solution
If you are female, get a man to do the job :)

You need a peice of plaster board bigger than the hole, actually at least 2, you need drywall filler and drywall tape and you need a saw to cut your hole into a square.and you need drywall screws.
Cut a peice of plasterboard (or Plywood) slightly, smaller in width than your square hole and at least 4 inches longer. put a gyprock screw in the center so it just to the other side. This is going to be your way of holding the patch inside the hole while you fasten it. You are going to hold the screw and put this peice of plasterboard in the hole and behind it and screw through the plasterboard wall into the overlap of the plasterboard on both sides (it has to be centered). Now take out the center screw you used to hold this plasterboard while positioning and screwing, Now cut a peice of plasterboard the same size or slightly smaller than that square, you place the new square in the hole and screw it to the backing you installed.
Put drywall filler and tape around the edges and you will have to feather the repair by sanding until the wall is smooth, then paint the wall

Stuff the hole with small srewed up balls of newspaper and smooth over with polyfiller. Leave to dry, sand down and then paint over..Hey presto! No hole...proceed to hang picture with a bit more caution this time! Good Luck
