How about - how people express emotion in creative ways, like music, art & writing. You could talk about how children often express what they are feeling (but dont know how to say) through drawing for instance. Good Luck!

When i was in speech I had a "How to...." speech as well and i did "How to fart in public and not get caught" I received an A. I know it sounds kind of silly and embarrassing but it requires little research and its funny and original. Another topic which was very popular with out professor was "How to survive a Zombie Infection" there is actually a book called "The Zombie Survival Guide" which you can use as a source.

Do it on how technology has very subtely changed the way we live
1) Less people have a need for a home phone since we all have cell phones or
2) no one really buys low-end watches anymore, since the cell phones have clocks.
3) Is it possible for us to just have one device that is a cell phone, and MP3 and an e-mail device (I think this is out already) and just be assigned a phone number from birth (like a SS#) to take with us throughout our lives?
I think these are iteresting topics with very minimal controversy.good luck.

Chickens! Honestly, I've used it for a speech and came in second place. First place dealt with homosexuality.
You could do a speech on stupid tags you find on the backs of things...like the one on the back of your remote control "Do not place in microwave". Or the one on the nut-covered Brownies "May contain nuts". You could make it interesting, humorous and connect with the audience in a good way. It would be something with which everyone could relate.

Gabby, fantastic question, and you've got a lot of great answers. Including that one about your Constitutional Right to Freedom of Speech is a good topic, for not letting you chose the subject freely.

How about the positive aspects of volunteering? I suppose almost anything could be made controversial though.

Or consider talking about an unusual career, such as something in anthropology or forensics or the entertainment industry?

Clowns? A hobby?

I did a speech one time on microchip implantation in humans--it was for a college class. I got top scores for it. It's quite an interesting topic.

Well for one don't misspell president and then insult him it doesn't make you look very smart ; )
Write about the education system and how it has changed for better or for worse.
