The humanities should be taught in school because the courses are mostly subjective. They ask for each individual opinion and they force you to interpret information. These skills are very necessary to be successful at anything in life. They also require a lot of reading and that is an invaluable tool for a successful education. The humanities force students to look at the world from many different perspectives and then take from the sum of all thoughts to create new thoughts and ideas. They foster creative thinking and that is the most important contribution they make to one's total education.

The trouble is, these kind of things cannot be taught, they can only be learned. The danger with including them at school is the risk of overly simplistic, generic analysis of everything.

I think there should be more exposure of students to these subjects, but not necessarily through the medium of straightforward teaching.

Dead Poets Society is well worth watching if you're interested in this kind of thing.

These subject matters only serve to broaden our horizons and bring us to a different level and historical place in time. I'd rather have a piece of history than be surrounded by ignorance.t
