One side of the tank/vivarium should be set as the 'hot' side. This side should be where the bulb is and you place the heat mat underneath the tank on the same side the bulb is on.
The other side will be used as the 'cool' side, where your snake can go if he feels too hot.
Make sure you provide a 'hide' or some form of shelter on each side too!
Good luck :]

you take the heat mat off the cage if it is plastic, go to wal-mart, get a lamp dimmer and a temp gauge w/probe.

go home, hook the lamp dimmer to the heat mat, put the heat mat on one corner or one side of the cage, on the outside, underneath the cage!

turn the lamp dimmer down to about half.

Take the temp gauge w/probe, and put the probe on the inside over the heat pad, UNDER the substrate.

monitor the temps until it stays around 80-85 (I usually kept mine around 83-84 degrees).

An unregulated heat pad can get well over 100 degrees, which can kill your snake. and on plastic, it WILL melt the plastic!!!

Tell your friend to do more research before getting animals that require special care.

there is no such thing as a "classic corn" it's just a normal.

do NOT get a bulb for the snake to "bask under" as most snakes are nocturnal, and get their heat from rocks/sand that was warmed up during the day. They get their heat from UNDERNEATH, NOT above!

DO YOUR RESEARCH PEOPLE!

I'm sure I read that the mat must be covered with sand or gravel as It may burn the snake if in direct contact. As there are so many varied answers I would suggest a phone call to a reptile society or Vet , they will be glad to answer the question to ensure the snake has the proper care.

It is going below the glass. There might desire to additionally be an excellent number of substrate (bark) over it in any different case it may nevertheless get warm adequate to burn your undesirable snake. in addition they say that it won't go below the water dish, or on the area of the tank that the water dish is on. As an element word, the snake might desire to also have a warmth lamp. they want the UV rays. experts say that warmth lamp & heating pad might desire to head on the comparable area, allowing the snake to have a "cool area" to head chill out in if he gets warm. I extremely have discovered that having them the two on the comparable area make that area absurdly warm. I positioned one one the two area, yet do not turn them the two on on the comparable time apart from interior the iciness whilst it is so freezing. Get a thermometer for the cage. you will get the little sticky label style for a pair greenbacks at maximum reptile shops. positioned it in a independent section interior the cage, i.e. not straight away under the warmth lamp. shop your eye on it. they might desire to be stored at around 80-ninety ranges. do somewhat study for a extra specific temperature purpose. Congratulations, and sturdy success!

Yes, at one end. This enables the snake to choose a warmer, or a cooler, place whenever he wants. Personally, I prefer a heat lamp for the snake to bask under.

If you have a glass aquarium you should place the mat under the tank at one end.
