Late at night I can hear the SEA LIONS (wow!) barking out past the cliffs, a whole mile from my windows. What animals or nature sounds are active when you're trying not to be? The ocean air seems saltier and fresher in the middle of the night, yum.
(hard to find the best catagory for this Q)

In the spring and early summer, time for the local tree frogs to breed, they come out of the trees to our rainbarrels. They croak their fool heads off. Some times they actually stick on the bed room window and it's deafening.
I've had to go out at 2AM with a flash light, collect them and put them back in the trees, or near a puddle away from the house, before getting any rest. But, boy those tadpoles can keep the rainbarrels clean as a whistle. They eat all mosquitto larve and the algea too. It's worth it for the most part.

What a lovely sound to be able to hear at night!

I can hear our cat Lottie, who sleeps on our bed, purring. An amazingly comforting, throaty purr.

Also there is a thrush ( I think it's a thrush) who seems to be fooled by bright moonlight into thinking it's dawn and so sometimes starts singing its lovely song around three-thirty a.m.!

I can hear the air swoosh around in my fireplace. The fireplace doesn't work anymore, but on windy nights, the air goes in and out,in and out,in and out from it.That is so cool that u can hear SEA LIONS!!!!!I can also hear my cat purring in her bed next to mine, and my dog snoring next to me.
