I was terrified of the fact of getting one cuz I have heard they hurt like hell. But I have had 3 births and everyone I got an epidural and lets just say being able to focus on the birth and not be completely tired by the time the baby was born was a blessing. Sure it hurts alittle but its nothing compared to contractions. My births where 16 hrs, 20 hrs and 21 hrs.

Yep i had an epidural with my first, i was induced and pitocin induced contractions are HELL! Anyway, to answer your question yes getting the epidural hurt. The freezing they put in first pinches (the needle) then stings (the medicine) then you wont feel anything. When they insert the catheter you'll feel it running down your spine, which is messed up, but doesn't' hurt at all. If the anaesthesiologist is good with the epidural you wont have any more pain from there on, if the anaesthesiologist was a dork you may have back pain and a headache after, but trust me it's NOTHING like those contractions and is nothing to be afraid of :)

I had my first 2 babies all natural, nothing for pain before, during or after... It was so unbearable and traumatic that with my son (2nd baby) my heart rate went up very high. the doc told my mom he was worried that I was going to have a heart attack.. after I had my son, everything went back to normal, the doc said the pain was to intense for me to handle. (everyone reacts different to pain) Needless to say, with my third I did a little research on epidurals and I decided to have one. The contractions were so pain full that when they gave me the epidural I did not feel it. After the epidural kicked in my husband and I fell asleep, 2 hours later the nurse woke us up and said the baby was coming out. That was the easiest delivery I have ever had. I am now 38 weeks pregnant and I will definitely ask for an epidural...

I have had 2 epidurals and though they hurt a little, like any injection would, other than that they were pretty painless, they administer a local anaesthetic to numb the area first anyway so whatever you feel should be minimal. The worst part was trying to curl into a ball when 9 months pregnant so she could have a clear view of the spine.

I had an epidural almost 11yrs ago and it hurts to this day. The guy who did it was TERRIBLE if I knew who he was I would strangle him. On the other hand I have many friends who swear by epidurals. I think if you have an experienced person administer it you should be fine. (at least thats what I've been told) Women either love them or hate them, I happen to be one of the later. Most likely you will love it...either way good luck and check out the person who will give it to you...

sure, it hurts a little, but it only lasts a second and it saves you soooooooo much more pain afterwards, it's totally worth it! I went into labor saying "I am not absolutely certain I'll get an epidural, but if I feel like the pain is too much to bear, I won't question my decision to get one." I ended up being in labor for 2 days, so it was worth it!!

I believe the epidural was the worst part of the whole laborl, but that could have been just cause of the anesthesiaologist. But after it, I couldn't feel anything so it was WELL worth it.

Not at all! There was a sting from the local anesthetic shot so the doctor could put the epidural catheter in, but besides that I was fine!

yes, but not as much as the contractions every minute. And not as much as the burning fire of a child trying to ram its head out of a small opening. Trust me once you experience this, all you will want is an epidural!

funny story...they prepped me for my epidural and 1/2 a second b4 he stuck the needle in i had the worlds worst contraction...i yelled son of a monkeys *** {the stadol had me all sorts of messed up} and the dr. said "well, i've called a lot of things but i think that that is a 1st". funny part is, i didn't even feel the needle; not one bit i was talking about the contraction...ok maybe it's not that funny, but it was at the time =0)
