My baby daughter has never used a pacifier before, but she just started using it all the time (my mother-in-law gave it to her). Is this OK or should I take it away from her? If she can continue using it, when and how do I wean her from it? She's 10.5 months.

Yes, this is okay. I would and did take my children off of it at their One year Birthday. The Dentist said after age one it can hurt the teethe. With my first one it was hard got better after I learned what to do. Really the only thing you can do is let them cry. sounds bad I know but, start with 5 min. of crying give it back after, then next night try 10 min. each night add 5 min. to your time. Do this for one week then do not give it back. This may work for you and your baby. Remember what ever you try, do it for at least a week. you will not know if something will work until you try it long enough.

If I were you I would take it away from her now. I think it will be easier to take it now then wait and take it later. I have a 2 month old baby and she loves hers. I would be crazy without it because otherwise she would use me. If you do let her keep it then when she gets old enough to understand short stories there are quite a few cute ones that parents tell their children to get them to give it up. One is that there is a pacifier fairy that comes and takes pacifiers to new babies that need them. You get her to tie it in a tree at night and the next morning there is a present waiting for her there. I've seen that work. I've also seen just taking it away and dealing with them being upset for a while. Whatever you choose it is up to you. Good luck.

Well first of all I would have a talk with your mother in law about overstepping her boundaries. She shouldn't have given your daughter something without clearing it with you first. Personally I'm not a fan of pacifiers, especially as baby gets older. Since she just started it will be easier to break now than if you wait a few months/years. It really isn't good for her teeth to start this habit. I would try to take it away from her gradually - pop it out of her mouth and then distract her until she forgets about it, play her favorite games with her or take her someplace fun. SHe might cry for it for a while, but keep comforting her and she will learn to do without it.

a. no child can assemble anything by the time they can crawl.
b. pacifiers these days are usually orthodontic so they do not create problems later with dental work.
c. children usually only use pacifiers for comfort when they are small and have a strong need to suckle.
d. parents often misuse pacifiers when babies are actually hungry.

I agree that your mother-in-law made a major mistake, giving a child a pacifier is a personal choice as a parent and she should never have done so, perhaps she needs a little reminder that you are her mother and not her.

Honestly I would take it away from her. If she has never used a pacifier until now, take it away. I took the bottle away from my son at 10.5 months. I took the pacifier away from him when he was 13 months. She is just going to get too comfortable with it and you don't want that.

yes it is ok to let ur baby suck on a pacifier and most babies will wean themseleves off of it i did when i was a baby but i would let her have it until she is at least 2 years old and then maybe only give it to her at nap time or when she is sleepin to make her feel more comfortable and she should finally get rid of it u could try to use it one night and not the next it just depends on ur baby u r very lucky to have a baby and good luck with her

If she has gone this long without it she doesn't need it. I would take it away. If this proves to be impossible, then wait until she is old enough to understand that she is a big girl and she doesn't need it any more. I would slowly wean her from it, taking it away when she is just sucking on it for no reason at all. Good luck!

My daughters both used one until about 1 1/2. My littlest ones specialist actually told us it helps with ear infections because of the sucking motions. There are many studies out there, and they all conflict, but the truth is they won't hurt teeth until age 2, per my pediatrician and dentist, and they may actually help. And if they are a source of of comfort them it is up to you to decide what is best.
