I've been living in Japan for about 200 years, but I've never heard Honda, Yamaha, Mitsubishi or Sony stadiums. They may have sponsored for building some of the major stadiums in Japan. But none of the stadiums are called by those corporation names.

As someone said above, most of the major stadiums in Japan were built for baseball, soccer, and track & field. In-door stadiums such as Sapporo Dome, Tokyo Dome, Nagoya Dome, Osaka Dome, Fukuoka Dome, are excellent facilities not only for baseball but for Rock concerts and a variety of exhibitions and events all the year round. No stadiums can survive without commercial success - this may be the difference from UK sports facilities, I imagine.

<"The Japanese don't have a great reputation for international sports."> Excuse me???? What kind of newspaper are you reading in the UK?
Japanese athletes are doing pretty good in international sports events: baseball (Gold medal), softball (Silver medal), women's marathon (Gold medal), swimming (Gold medal), Judo (Gold medal), hammer throw (Gold medal), gymnastics (Gold medal), rhythmic gymnastics (Silver medal), figure skating (Gold medal) and on and on! You should check their excellent performance in the Olympic games and other international events for the last 10 years to say the least.

The thing about buildings like the Tokyo Dome and the Fukuoka Dome is they host baseball teams that play about 80 home games a year. On top of the baseball there are concerts, boxing and wrestling, J-league soccer, etc. The Tokyo Dome runs pretty well full out-the off days are used for maintenance. You just can't justify the same kind of investment for a soccer only schedule.
