I am considering a move here for law school and raise my son who would be starting school. The town sounds good on paper but we all know that there is a "picture town" and the "real town". Can anyone give me info ont he "real" Iowa City, IA? Are there gang problems, racial tensions, huge drug problem, how are the schools besides test scores....etc.

My son would be turning 5 the year we move and I am a single parent with one income. Any info would be great.

Iowa City is a great place to live. A friend of mine is raising her kid there on one income too. The picture town you see is all Univ of Iowa. The rest of it is perfectly fine too (aside from trailer park sections where there's a mix of college students and drug users). There are perfectly normal residential areas, and areas with high end homes for the professors and doctors. The UI hospital there is one of the absolute best in the country. The racial tensions aren't too terrible because of the mix of students and faculty so everyone is used to the diversity. I can't answer about the schools though since I don't know.

Another friend of mine lived in North Liberty which is more of a bedroom town for IC. Oh, and when UI is out for the summer, the population of the town drops by half. The shopping and dining is pretty excellent. Anything from mom and pops to really classy. Coralville is a suburb which built a gigantic mall with even an indoor ice rink.

Although I've never lived there (but went to college a few miles away and had friends in IC), it's the most cultural city in Iowa. And that law program is one of the best!

Iowa City is populated exclusively by green zombies from Saturn. They are not racist but they do want to eat your brain. I'm surprised that your mommy and daddy didn't explain this to you after they decided to move there.
