ive heard that with eclipses, theyre either the most reliable cars on the planet, or theyre total garage queens (always breaking)...personally, i wouldnt waste my time on them, ESPECIALLY the newer ones...i side swiped one, i believe a '00 model in my 87 fiero, and while i got a scuff mark on my door, they ended up with $1000 worth of damage...theyre pieces of junk as far as im concerned.

It all really depends on how you treat the car and if you modify it beyond stock. A lot of Eclipses are getting older and the owners are typically younger. They are more eager to put after market parts on the car and make it go faster rather than keeping up with typical maintenance such as changing the timing belt and such other than just changing the oil. It's that typical neglect that makes them known to "break or fail," not the vehicle itself. Also, when modifying the car you can not simply bolt on parts and expect everything to be peachy keen. This applies especially to the turbo models of the car. So no, with proper upkeep Eclipses are not known to break or fail.

There are quite a few known problems with them. One of the ones I've heard the most about is the second generation turbo models are prone to bearing failure due to a faulty oiling system. Of course, part of the problem is that these cars are cheap and fast (or fast looking if you didn't check the right option boxes), so many of them fell into the hands of young maniacs.

The third generation ones seem to be a bit better, but this may be just that they don't have the same street racer appeal. Still, at best, they only seem average. Not all Japanese manufacturers are as fanatical about quality as Honda or Toyota.

According to a "leading consumer magazine", the breakdown for the 2000 through 2003 eclipses are like this: Reliability ratings - 2000-average except for paint problems, 2001- good except for paint problems and body problems, (seat belts, latches, doors, liftgate latches) stuff like that, 2002 rated good except for cooling system problems, and 2003 ok except for body problems also.

They could be really good, if you know how to pick your car. But on the other hand, any car can be a piece of junk if a person doesn't know how to pick a good one.
