I am 22 years of age and I started getting blood in my urine, but only after taking a bowel movement , passing gas, and having sexual intercourse. It will go away, then come back. I have went to the ER and they took a CT scan and urinalysis and found nothing. Please give me some answers if you have them, I was wondering if it had something to do with my prostate. I have no pain or anything and just want to know something before I go to a urologist. I really don't want a cystoscopy if I don't have to because of the risks of causing more damage. Thankyou

The CT scan should have shown damage to your kidneys and any kidney stones. Recurrent acute hematuria (it only take a teaspoon of blood to make urine pink) can be a benign condition. We all lose some blood cells in our urine but it is usually not visible. Coke colored urine usually means more severe problems. You are saying you only notice this when there has been added pressure on your bladder.

If you are taking any blood thinners including aspirin stop them. You are young for the prostate to be a factor. I would expect an infection to cause more persistent symptoms.

I think the only way to be sure that this is benign is to consult a urologist who probably will give you a cystoscopic examination. This should not cause any more damage. It takes about 10 minutes and you will be given sedation. The most common cause of painless hematuria is a tumor which can be benign or malignant. I think it would be best to know and have it treated if necessary.

Knowledge is power. Good luck to you.

Go to a urologist next time you have an occurence, he can better test you than the ER, and will be a lot cheaper. Some guys just tend to pass blood, I've done it infrequently, my urologist said if it cleared up right away, he was not concerned. Sometimes it is just a ruptured blood vessel from pressure on an area of your urinary tract, which probably explains when you are getting the problem.

Blood in the urine (hematuria) may be intermittent, so several samples should be carefully examined. What was included in the CT scan? You should have this condition evaluated further. The risks of cystoscopy are minimal compared to risks of allowing a treatable condition go unchecked.
