Explain the problems involved in finding out about sweatshops.

Tony's answer is good, but let's remember that sweatshops are not just in the past. Big multinational companies like Walmart still use sweatshops in Mexico and China as their main suppliers.

Here's the main problem in finding out about sweatshops: Those big companies spend a lot on public relations, to convince the public it's perfectly okay to buy stuff made by virtual slaves. And it seems that the PR works.

Look at the "Made in ..." tags on the clothes in your closet. How many were made by poor foreigners, struggling to feed their families on a buck an hour, even a buck a day?

Some writers have done a lot to expose today's sweatshops. I'll include samples from one Canadian writer below.

Sweatshops most commonly refer to late 19th century garment industry shops in which women and children(mostly immigrants) would work 16 hours a day, 7 days a week for very very low wages. Finding out about them is as easy as clicking on google.
