Fort Walton is fairly small, but it is right next to Destin on the Panhandle of Florida. Destin is 5-10 minutes from it and Fort Walton & Destin's beaches are beautiful. If you go another 45 minutes west you will hit Pensacola which is beautiful too. Pensacola has much more to do and is less expensive than Destin. Although the few things Destin has are all packed closely together. If you are looking for nightlife I would reccomend Destin [Brittany Spears has a place there and is often spotted there durring the summer] If you are looking for a nice place to live or go to school [University of West Florida is a wonderful smaller school with a beautiful campus but it too is growing] I reccomend Pensacola. I do not reccomend Fort Walton because there are many druggies there & its just not as nice a place. Both Fort Walton and Pensacola have millitary training bases so are continually bringing in new recruits.

Ft. Walton Beach is in the panhandle a long way from Miami. It is at the North Western part of the state.
There ar lots of hotels and I'm sure you can get get loads of info by visiting their chamber of commerce website or their visitor's bureau. It is nothing like Miami that's for sure.
