I have 1 yellow a/c that looks beat up. I did see him and another doing something that looked like kissing. Is that bad or good? Were they fighting? Or it is a mating thing? I had 12 a/c in a 90 gal tank. It is well established. Had the h2o tested- fine.

Jaw-locking and other behaviors resembling 'kissing' are a form of testing strength among african cichlids. Commonly seen among rivals, not spawning partners. Just of the behavior patterns african cichlids utilize to establish the pecking order or hierarchy in the tank.

Yes, they will mate but what you are describing is more like an aggressive behavior. The "kissing" is a type of fighting. It could be over a certain territory in the tank or just a larger fish dominating over a smaller one.
