My old neighbor passed away and the oil ran out. We had oil delivered but I don't know how to get the oil from the tank to the burner. It's an old furnace and both the tank and furnace are in the basement.

Hi, are you shivering right now? First, you crack the fitting loose on the line from the tank until you see oil, then re-tighten. Next you will have to bleed the pump. You should see a bleeder type fitting on the pump body, find a wrench that fits it. You will have to hit the reset button on the motor starter, it will trip after a short length of time without the burner running. Hit the reset button and then crack the bleeder screw until you have a pressurized stream of oil, then re-tighten. Your burner should light. If it doesn't light immediately you may need a new nozzle and/or electrodes. Hope this helps, stay warm.

Crack the oil line loose at the burner. Gravity should take over from there. Even though they're both in the basement, the oil level in the tank is higher than the burner's inlet connection so it should gravity feed once you crack the connection so the air can be expelled from the lines.

If you have a Riello type burner remove cover. On the left side of the burner(this is the fuel pump) there's a nut shape screw, remove it . Cover the hole with a rag ( to prevent fuel spray) press the reset button,if no repeat.Furnace will not start with screw removed.
