1. Lenny is mentaly challenged (not just mildly retarded, had some real issues, and never was able to grow past 4 or 5 years old)
2. Lenny had no real and true concept of "right" from "wrong", and hugging bunnys to death was something that he did not really understand (refer to #1)
3. Lenny got with the wrong crowd, basically it was the times he was born to, and the lack of education and understanding of his running mates.

Lennie, in "Of Mice and Men" is somewhat mentally challenged. At the time the book was written he would have been termed mentally retarded. He is a very large man with the mind of a small child.
