It all began over a month ago when i was exercising doing some side crunches in the air (on a back extension machine). During the exercise i got some sharp pains in my lower left side. Ever since then i'm having a dull pain in my side daily and sometimes it is even sharp (rarely). My question is what could cause this ? and please don't answer if you are going to just say "go to a doctor". Of course i already have an appointment

It's likely a pulled muscle, like someone said. Rest it for a couple days so it can heal, and try some ibuprofen for the pain. It should be fine. If you keep exercising it, it won't have a chance to fully heal, which is why it still hurts.
Oh, and don't listen to the idiot who said it was your appendix. Your appendix is on the *right* side, not the left.

There are many causes of chest pain. The one that doctors worry about the most is cardiac because it has the potential to be life-threatening. Once this is ruled out the work-up can proceed at a more leisurely pace. Congratulations on quitting smoking as this is the single biggest thing you can do to improve your health. Amongst the cardiac causes of chest pain are:ischemia (due to blockages - including both stable and unstable angina and acute heart attack and coronary artery spasm), pericarditis (inflammation of the sack around the heart), myocarditis (inflammation of the heart), cardiomyopathy (heart failure) and rarer causes such as coronary artery dissection, acute rupture of the heart and valves and infections of the pericardium. Gastrointestinal causes of chest pain include reflux (acid from the stomach washing back into the esophagus), gallstones, esophageal spasm, esophageal rupture, varicose veins of the esophagus, strictures of the esophagus, tumors of the esophagus and other less common GI problems. Pulmonary (lung) causes include pneumonia, pulmonary embolus, pneumothorax, pleuritis and bleb rupture. Other potential causes are aortic dissection, back and spine problems and musculoskeletal (muscle strain, rib fracture, etc.). Psychological causes of chest pain are common and include panic attacks, anxiety, stress and mental duress. As you can see the list of potential causes in long and may take a little bit of time to determine the precise cause. A good Internal Medicine doctor should be able to work through the potential causes of your symptoms. If necessary he/she can refer you to a cardiologist.

Oh have I been there....sounds much like a pulled muscle. Those take several weeks to heal unlike a bruise.
Maybe cut down on the workouts and if you workout, apply ice.
Thats what I do, after I go to the chiropractor...your muscle is still swelled.
Take it easy and good luck

I'm guessing you've strained it by overworking your muscles in your side.try not to lift your whole upper body while doing crunches and definitely do your crunches much slower next time. your sides probably aggravated by the repeated movement, try relaxing

likely a pulled muscle. This exercise in particular puts a lot of strain on the abs. Train them a little lighter. It will go away.

It's normal for that to happen. I get it to. Whenever people run that happens it's nothing serious. I wouldn't see a doctor for this reason.
