he keeps farting non-stop and i'm worried it might be his diet. He's almost 100% grassfed, and i'd reward him from time to time with carrots, but his farting's way out of line. Or could it be normal? I'm afraid one of this days he'd get colic!

the grass may be too rich for him

He could also be cribbing (which is where your horse will suck in air but they do it in a way that it goes in their stomach instead of the lungs...this can cause gas colic and according to my vet it gives them some kind of high) my horse does it and she farts alot to get her to stop my vet said get her a cribbing strap (miracle collar works well and wont rub although a little expensive($50) it really works and its cheaper than colic surgery)

Good luck ask your vet about the grass if its too rich and keep an eye on him to see if he's cribbing

You'd have to ask your vet to be sure. Horses can have gas colic, but will show signs of discomfort and pain associated with it. Farting is normal in horses and some do seem to do it more than others. A largely grass diet is best for most horses as alfalfa can be too rich and is most important in young growing horses, lactating mares, and high performance animals.

You might want to try though giving him something like Forco ... it has the "good bacteria" for the gut and other digestive helpers. Your horse might be missing or low on some of the good gut bacteria that help him digest all his food properly. After asking the vet, I'd try that or another similar product.

But.... then it might just be normal for your horse.

My horses were bad on the gas. Two things may make it worse: Hay/Grass and low "good" stomach bacteria. Talk to your vet about alternatives. I did and while they still tooted away, it wasn't as much.
