I already have a domain name, and to save getting someone to make it for me for some money, i'd like to have a bash at making it for myself as I am artistic and a good designer, and am good at learning new programmes on the computer.

I don't want to make it in html, something easy. I would like the programme download to be free. Has anyone used or know of any good ones I can download from the internet?

Thanks for your help xx

Someone already mentioned NVU as a good freeware web design application, and I'd second that. If you want a really professional look, you might want to download some templates to work from. With templates you can get something professional uploaded very quickly, and once you're more confident with your own design skills you can play about with them, making your own personalised versions.

It's a good idea to take a look at some html tutorials at the same time you're learning how to design. There's a good free 10 week course here: http://webdesign.about.com/c/ec/9.htm It'll give you a basic understanding of what code is being written while you're designing, and can help if you want to do something that your design interface doesn't know how to do (My first web design software couldn't code links to open in a new window, so I would have to open the page up in Notepad and code in _blank tags until I wanted to scream).

Microsoft (free domain and hosting for life) , Google (Googlepages, Blogger) , Yahoo (Geocities), Freewebs are some of the companies offering free websites with design tools . A list of free websites with features and links is available at http://tinyurl.com/lw7kp

The best free HTML editor is NVU http://www.nvu.com. You'll need to find out a bit about web editing but they've got tutorials on their website. There's also no shortage of online tutorials.

As for web space, your ISP (if you have one) probably supplies web space for free. After that, you'll have to start paying but it won't necessarily break the bank.

Look up http://www.excelyourbiz.com
to learn how to build a professional website on your own without the high cost of paying for a webmaster for free or for a low cost. They show you everything you need to know to build your own web site.

They offer advice and guide you through the steps to
build your very own web site. Basic computer skills are needed
and you don't need to be a computer whiz to build your own website.
