Maybe you should have kept the car so you could have given him a ride...what's more important to YOU. YOUR injured / dead child...or reducing your contribution to pollution by a miniscule amount.

Makes you think don't it.

Did the car stop after it had hit your 5yr old son? Were you a witness? Were there any other witnesses? Did anyone managed to get the car registration number or part thereof?

Assuming the incidet has been reported to the police and that you have an 'incident number', you should now be able to start a campaign both in your local press and amongst your neighbours. Get as many people as possible involved in your neighbourhood.

Next step is to contact your local councellor(s) and get them in on the action - questions in the town hall etc. You also need to involve your local MP and any other important people you can think of living in the neighbourhood, priests, doctors, lawyers - as many professionals as possible.

The aim of your campaign is to get a speed cam fitted along the route leading to the Zebra Crossing from both sides. This should not be too difficult, especially if it is a busy road. The police are always looking for extra income and traffic speed cams are big money.

I'm not an expert in these matters, but have read about such campaigns as roughly outlined above. I heard of one village which could not get a speed cam so they made their own in a yellow box and shoved it up - the traffic slowed to a crawl. Cannot remember what.

In addition to all of what has been written above, you might find it useful to contact other groups who are conducting a similar campaign. Got to be something on the Internet. There are also civilian safety groups you might try as well, they will be most interested and may be able to assist you in mounting a successful campaign.

Good luck and I'm glad to know your son is safe but sorry that another loon is out there driving madly. Let's just hope whoever it is, gets caught before they kill a child.

I sincerely hope you son is OK. My son's best friend was hit a few years ago when riding his bicycle and that was scarey enough, can't imagine what your going through.

We had a traffic control seminar presented by Dan Burden of this site. He helped us identify our needs and what to do. Talk to your local city council person, write letters, get others to write because I will bet many others in your area are angry about the same thing. Traffic calming devices are listed on the site and are the things we decided to use. Enforcement is part of it but no city can afford to hire enough cops to truly enforce traffic laws.

Secondly, when I took motorcycle safety courses we were told to increase our visibility. Bright reflective clothing, arm bands with red LEDs (flashing if allowed by law in your area) were some of the ideas. Even though the motorist is at fault that is little consolation as a pedestrian, bicyclist or motorcyclist always loses in a confrontation with a car/truck (aka cages).

I applaud your efforts to go green. All communities for may reasons need to look at encouraging people to get out of their cars. Good on ya!!!!!

Nothing will ever make these people see sense. Their brains have a sensible cell missing. Hope your son is OK. Good luck.
