two people, lennie and george, lennie is strong and dumb, george is short but smart, they both share their American dream, to own their own ranch, that is the main theme of the book, the american dream. Lennie likes to pet soft things [mice, dogs] but he ends up accidentally killing them as a result of his inherent strength, evenutally they work on a ranch, lennie ends up petting someone's wife's hair, i forget who, he kills her [not maliciously] then runs, george knows that if the others find him, they will torture him, so george finds him and shoots him to not see him suffer.

Of Mice and Men is set during the Great Depression, on a ranch in California. The two main characters are George and Lennie, who are trying to get enough money to puruse their "Great American Dream" which is to own their own farm. Lennie is tall strong, and mentally retarded or has some other mental problem (Steinbeck does not specify). His companion and friend, George looks out for him...and although he grumbles about doing so throughout the book it is clear that he cares a great deal for Lennie.

This is the set up of the story and I won't reveal any more. It is a very short book and your nephew will have no problems reading it (however it does have quite a bit of cuss words). I hope this helps!

The title is "Of Mice and Men." John Steinbeck wrote it. It concerns George and Lenny - migrant farmworkers pursuing George's version of the American dream, but Lenny has the mind of a child, and inadvertantly derails George's plans, with tragic results for everyone.

You'll laugh and cry. It's a short book. The best help you can do for your nephew is to read it with him, and talk about it as you go.

I love Steinbeck...but this book is my least favorite...It is not a pleasant story...why do teachers keep focusing on it....I'd rather have kids read Cannery Row, Sweet Thursday, Tortillla Flat and Of course East of Eden and Grapes Of Wrath..those are very good examples of Steinbecks talents
