My 11-month-old has lost interest in the bottle. He takes 8 ounces at breakfast but I'm lucky to get another 10 in him all day long, offering 3 more bottles. I always offer him water or juice at meals but he's not too interested in that either. I'm afraid he may get dehydrated and that he's not getting the right nutrition. Should I go ahead and move him to milk? Any other suggestions?

well, when my son was 11months old, we added a little real milk to his bottle, and to his baby oatmeal, so that his body would slowly get used to milk, and was feeding him fruit, bread, crackers, cheese etc... and he liked that. then he had regular whole milk, and juice to drink. it's okay. they say to get off the bottle at a year anyway, so your only a month early. Get him a sippy cup. maybe dillute the juice. If your worried about dehydration or lack of nutrients you could try pediasure. !! Godd lucK!

When they start refusing the bottle, that means they're ready for a cup, so don't force him to take a bottle. It's great that he's decided he's ready for it without you having to get him off the bottle. That can be a real battle. There are some really good cups out now which have leak proof lids, even when they're turned upside down. I would not switch him to cow's milk until he's a full year old, you don't want to risk any allergies. Check with your doctor on that. By now he can probably also be on most table foods, depending on how many teeth he has, except for dairy, although yogurt is probably OK. Again, check with your doctor.

It sounds like you are giving him too much formula. If he is eating enough though out the day I would suggest giving him just what he'll take.

Have you put the juice or water in sippy cups? Try the cups with the straws. I think it is great that he does not want the bottle. One less thing you have to try taking away from him at a year old.

If you are really concerned call your md.

Have you tried putting his formula in a sippy cup rather than a bottle?
Some babies around this age just get bored with a bottle and will respond better to a cup.
Also, you might add a bit of flavor to the formula with pureed fruit, making it similar to a milk shake.
Change to regular milk cautiously watching for signs of allergy. If he is already eating other dairy products such as cheese and eggs he will probably be fine with whole milk.

Yup, at this age you can start cows milk. I started giving my little one cows milk at 10-1/2 month because she got off the whole formula thing, her choice... just make sure that they get enough calcum, suplament that with small curd cottage cheese or yoguts. Juice should help keep any dehydration away, gerber brand is good, but any old brand will due, I do suggest you water down sugar based apple juice50/50, but 100% natural apple juice should be fine as a whole. Good luck!

First of all I want to say congratulations for making it almost to the one year mark nursing. I know how hard it is I am a first time mom with a 10 1/2 month old and I am also still nursing. I cut out the middle of the day feeding recently and have been giving her juice and water in its place. I am trying to cut out the night time feeding so I am supplementing with a bottle of formula at night, I think that she is so tired she doesn't even notice. I have not cut out the morning feeding because it buys me a couple more hours to sleep. Again be very proud of yourself for giving your son such a good start in life.

Most doctors will let you move them to milk at this time. Just do it gradually, like part milk and part formula (mostly formula at first). Eventually it will be all milk. Most people say using whole milk at first is best too. Personally, I'd check with your doctor or local health department. Are you serviing him juice in a sippy? Try it in between meals and encourage him a lot by praising him when he drinks it. That may help.

No, it's not OK. He needs the calcium for his rapid growth and bone structure to aid in walking. If he won't take formula, try mixing half formula and half whole milk. I did this at 11 months and my daughter took to it really well.

Babies, before one year, shouldn't have juice. WAY too much sugar. If you do offer juice, water it down. Your son shouldn't have more th an 4 oz. of juice per day.

I would give him milk, however, most DR.s do not recommend it. My kids hated formula and wanted to have real food and stuff at that age. It is your call though. He should be taking in some type of liquids though that is dangerous. If everything else fails, give him some hersheys syrup in some 2% milk, I guarantee he will drink that.;)
