Hi All

My cousin want to go to university and is worried about finding the money as he has only been offered the minimum amount for a student loan. He is looking to studty something to do with theatre and drama - on stage and behind, and was wondering if anybody knew of any schemes around for financial support or paid gap year placements for students like him.

I really want to help him as he is determined to do the uni thing. I did a year in industry, but I was wondering if there is anything out there for the type of area he is studing. Any help woul be wonderful.

Thanks all. L x

If your cousin has specific universities in mind, to which he has applied through UCAS, the best thing to do would be to find out what each university suggests. The majority of students have to work nowadays, or live through a variety of loans - e.g professional development loans etc. Universities are aware of this and will have schemes in place to help poorer students. However, as has been mentioned, the theatre world is a difficult one to enter and very few people involved in it earn above the minimum wage through acting, stage management, sound alone (to name a few). I would suggest trying to find answers through the official channels. Good Luck.

There are many scholarships and grants out there. Most require some sort of proof of need, like the FAFSA, of Free Application for Federal Student Aid. Some schools offer talent grants. these are competitive. Some students struggle, but they get by. Some students struggle and drop out. Some students seem to have it all. Drama is in itself a very competitive field and your friend might as well get used to it up front.
