I have not had this problem personally, but since I work with breastfeeding moms, I have seen this. If you haven't already, I would hook up with a lactation consultant (most hospitals employ them). A nipple sheild is a good start. You could also try pumping a little to get the nipple to stick out a little before offering the breast to the baby. Many of the women I have seen with this problem have been able to successfully breastfeed. It is a little more work, but with the right support and a lot of determination I have no doubt you can do this. Good Luck!

You've gotten great advice! Many moms do have no problem nursing with flat or inverted nipples so don't automatically assume you'll have problems. I want to clarify the difference between a Nipple Shield and a Nipple Shell. A shield is used to wear over your nipple while the baby nurses and a shell is used to wear between nursings to help draw the nipple out. La Leche League doesn't recommend the use of nipple shields because they can inhibit baby learning to suck properly, which can keep you from bringing in a full supply of milk. A nipple shell, however, is no problem.

My best friend has this problem. "Some nipples are small, others flat and a few inverted. A baby has no problem feeding at a flat or small nipple. In case your nipples are flat or inverted, you can hold the nipple between the thump and the index finger, and it can be easily pulled out. On the other hand in case of a retracted nipple the nipple goes deeper into the breast which makes feeding difficult." This is a quote from the website she used.
