Is there actually a reason why shops have to give you a receipt for your purchases? Do most people actually make use of them? Fair enough for things you may need to take back they serve a purpose, but for food is it worthwhile? Could they not just ask you if you wanted a receipt and if you didn't then they could save the paper, and save the environment and money at the same time?

Believe it or not, even groceries may be returned if they go bad before the expiry date, or if you simply don't need it anymore. If you don't want a receipt, just say so...but the paper isn't going to be saved because it's automatically in the computer to print off a copy. Don't worry about the paper, as it's going to be recycled. But for those who want a receipt...it's in their hands to decide whether or not to recylcle or chuck in in the garbage. 1 person makes a huge difference, so good for you.

by law the restaurant is required to give you the receipt, for taxes. If they don't they're probably trying to cheat the government. there's this little weird store in my town where you can buy firecrackers at any age and he doesn't give a receipt either, it's not a very honest place. Also if they don't make a receipt the cashiers could be steeling from the cash. I went to a Chinese restaurant not too long ago and they didn't give a receipt, later someone came by our table and asked if everything was alright. I told him about the receipt and he gave us the meal free. Restaurants take this kind of thing very seriously.

The receipt will print despite your wishes. So, you are not going to save any forest. The cash register has to show what happened for their books to sync. You can always throw away the receipt. They could set it upso that the receipt didn't print but, you would have to tell them before they started ringing it up. And, that's assuming the guy working the cash register knows how to turn it on and off. My wife and I save all our receipt for tax purposes. She buys a lot of crap and together our yearly receipts fit in a small bag.

They have to give you one if you request it, but you don't have to accept it. For instance, most electronic gas pumps will give you the option to print a receipt or not.
