This is a true story told by my uncle. Some 80 years ago he entered the kitchen of his village house at night. They had no electricty or runing water then. It was total darkness and he was so thirsty he simply dipped his head into the barrel of drinking water only to feel something swim past his face as he drunk. He jumped back and lit a match. There he saw a rat swiming on the surface.

Yes, in fact, they are taught how to swim at the beginning stage of their lives. Rats swim to survive, as some1 mentioned earlier, they live in sewers...they will need the ability to swim to get from one side to the other, they off course adapt to their environment and swim.....but , early rats can't swim.

Yes, you do get water rats- that spend a lot of time in the water.
It is also a useful way for them to get away from the cats - who can swim but don't like it much.

Yes -- but many North American and European rodents are not strong swimmers and are most easily drowned.

Other South American and Asian species can both swim well and actually crawl underwater for great distances.
