Syd, actually. Anyway...

He was really great in his college days. He formed bands, like Tea Set, that included future members of Pink Floyd. However, he discovered LSD. While it expanded his creative potentials, it did irreversible damage to his body.

Pink Floyd was slated to perform on some sort of talk show and play, but since the studio mikes weren't nearly as good as the recording mikes they use in the music studio, they were asked to just lip sync and "play" their music. Syd refused to do so, so Roger had to lip sync it for him.

Syd continued to write music, as well as take more LSD. He would refuse to play at concerts, and other times play the wrong song or just stop in the middle of the song and stare into space. Roger found David Gilmour, and as soon as he was settled, Roger told Syd that he probably should take a break for a while.

Syd continued writing music, producing albums like "The Madcap Laughs" and "Barrett". I believe that Roger produced these with him, even though Syd was no longer in the band. Soon he became a recluse and lived alone in his flat, visiting his mother and staying locked up, a prisoner in his own home.

Syd recently died on July 7th, 2006, of diabetes related problems. I think that he was about 60 when he died.

Read the article I posted below and click on Syd Barrett for more details.

He started Pink Floyd, but was doing a ton of LSD and eventually became debilitated and could no longer perform so they replaced him with David Gilmour, though there was a short time where both members were in the band.
