There is a freedom of information act but no equivalent freedom from invasion of privacy. Governments, big business (Experian) and the press all seem to want to know us all too much.
Article 8 Human Rights Act gives conditional right to private family life and correspondence, but this is not an absolute right.

Data Protecion Act.
"Sensitive Personal Data" - consent has to be expressley sought before personal details can be released e.g. medical records.
Most of the other stuff can be got around by the Freedom of Information Act, however most information can be anonymised.
